It starts off exactly where you want it to be—guitar-driven, punk-aware, melody-embracing. But after the Foxymorons open with “Out of Control,”
Bible Stories becomes a much more hit-or-miss affair. Skip over the languid “Skinny Cow Blues,” and jump to the Bon Iver-like falsetto of “This Too Shall Pass.” However, that’s really only a placeholder to the wave of guitar on “Say It Aloud,” as if pulled from the tapes of Hüsker Dü’s Warehouse; it’s only second to the opener as a strong track here. “We All Crawl” chimes in with a Lou Reed type of vocal and throws in a rootsy, piano-led feel to the indie rock. Fuzz guitar greets you on “Sick of California” with that falsetto vocal coming back like a cosmic brush over that guitar muscle, but the song wanders and fades in its poppy quirkiness. The Foxymorons have been said to have embraced the best of the 90’s indie rock, but they may have made too much of a smorgasbord of the past. The title track wrangles an acoustic guitar and saloon piano for a foot-stomping close to the album, a little more strength added to meandering album.
