Concerning Lions has Jars of Clay’s acoustic overtones to their take on Folk-influenced American Rock. The arrangements resonate and ripple out in so many directions. A Movement Back and Forth opens with “Canon” that pleads: “We’re children of crying children/Meet us.” There’s a sense of hiding in the bushes with Adam and Eve, hiding from God due to our sins but wanting so much for Him to meet us.
“Dragons” has a banjo-soaked, tentative beginning before the electric guitar charges in and announces the chorus. It’s a hurting heart song with a folk-laced hard edge where in the quiet moments, lead singer Brian Biese’s voice sounds a bit like Jason Mraz. “Lazarus” has a Sufjan Stevens introspection.
On “Rolling Storm, Titan Sigh”, acoustic guitar and toy piano provide the sense of aching creaks in old bones and old floorboards. When Biese sings, “We’re still so far from my wedding/Bring the oil, bring the oil,” it calls to mind the way we’re waiting for Jesus to return as Jesus Himself describes using in the metaphor of a wedding in a parable. In fact, Concerning Lions give glimpses of the Gospel throughout these songs, little phrases which point to something far grander.

Love this album. I can’t wait to see what this band will do with a full length album… as it stands, I just put this thing on repeat enough to get a full album’s worth.
