Reproductions is an album where songs are given the Charlotte Martin treatment: bombastic piano/keys with multi-layered sampler/loop texture plus Martin’s jazz-operatic punk wail. Unlike Shawn Colvin’s Cover Girl—a fine cover album in itself, Reproductions twists, turns, bends, reshapes, and performs covers as if they were completely new, altogether different tunes. Martin unleashes the plaintive nature of Eddie Vedder’s composition on Pearl Jam’s “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.” She performs the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” as if it is in a Broadway musical, the ballad sung solo y the lead protagonist heroine.
