The sound, voice, and wry lyricism make the Smiths an easy comparison to Editors on An End Has a Start. They begin with the great metaphor for our contradictory lives, “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors”—a track that has an epic, sweeping, Coldplay Britrock with a certain twang-swagger just hinted at. “An End Has a Start” comes on more like Radio 4 rejuvenating the Psychedelic Furs. “The Weight of the World” is the House of Love with a much bigger sound.

There are plenty of lyric licks here to explore spiritually as evidenced just by the short quotes in the liner notes that are like biblical proverb pull quotes, such as, “You fuse my broken bones back together again and then lift the weight of the world from my shoulders” (“Weight”). There’s Jesus offering to take on our suffering and give us His yoke which is easy and light.
